Try This at Home: Color Blocked Wall

Paint is one of the lease expensive ways to update your home. Not only can it have a major impact on a space, but there are dozens of techniques you can use and ways to use paint in interior design. If you've been considering painting a room or two try color blocking. It's where you paint only part of the wall by taping off a section. It's easy, doesn't involve any trimming and can be done in about an hour. Here's how.

First, paint the base color on your wall. If this is already the color your wall is currently, you can skip this step. If you are painting a large section, you only have to paint in as far as where your block will start. In this example, we painted the wall white around the edges and decided to do a dark gray color block about 9 inches in from each edge of the room. The pink area you see will get covered with our color block gray.

To section off the color block, use a good painters tape like Frog Tape to make straight lines where you want the second color. Press the edges of the tape onto the wall and now you can start with the new color. They sell paint for delicate surfaces too, like this kind shown.

Paint the entire block your color, using several coats if necessary and let it dry. Carefully peel off the painters tape and you are done. Color blocking looks great in both modern and traditional spaces where it is least expected. Plus you can get away with only buying a quart of paint instead of a whole gallon.

Here is how this space came out. It is the carriage house master bedroom in the Junior League of Buffalo's Decorators Show House designed by Timothy Aaron Creative.
