PHOTOS: A Walk Down Historic Linwood Avenue

Buffalo's Historic Linwood Avenue was granted neighborhood status by the City of Buffalo in 1978 and is formally called Linwood Historic Preservation District. Locally however, it's simply refered to as Linwood Avenue. Stretching from the eccentric Allen Street all the way to Delavan Avenue, Linwood runs between Delaware Avenue and Main Street. It's an old neighborhood with old growth trees and wide sidewalks.

The homes are impressive and the residents rightfully take pride in the amount of curb appeal that this street possesses. A dedicated bike lane runs down the side of this onenway street and bicyclists take full advantage of it. Between the large front yards, the heavily shaded sidewalks, and the distinctly different architectural features of the houses that balance each other perfectly, a walk down this street will give you that distinctly Buffalo feel.

Every year the neighborhood association, Linwood Preservation District & Friends, hosts what they call the Historic Linwood Tour of Homes. Tickets are inexpensive and grant you access to many of the homes and gardens on the street. If you appreciate great architecture and are keen to take a walk on a nice day, try walking the entire street. Start at Delavan and make your way to Allen. You're sure to be impressed and you can stop for a well deserved beverage on Allen once you're done.
