Editor's Picks - This Week's Best Bets | December 13 - 18
There are just 19 days left in 2016. Chanukah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, New Years Eve, with associated festivities, all loom. Get your jingle bells on quick!
M&T Bank certainly is. The annual Holiday Music Under the Dome programs beckons daily. From the Bishop Timon/St. Jude's Men's Chorus, to the Canisius High School Performing Ensembles, the Sacred Heart Music Department and the Iroquois High School Concert Choir, you will not be disappointed under the Gold Dome at Noon any day this week.
The most unusual event of the week is at the usually staid History Museum on Wednesday. Bring a memento, a photograph or an ornament to Object Slam: Holidays and tell a three-minute story about it. Cool!
Thursday brings not only Kissmas Bash at the Key Bank Center, but Cookies for a Cause at Flying Bison. Bring cookies to share and pay $5; come empty-handed and leave with a box of cookies for $10. Prefer fewer calories? Stop by Talking Leaves on Main Street for a Holiday Poetry Reading.
It's Holiday Pops weekend at Kleinhans. Friday 10:30am kicks off John Morris Russell's Holiday Pops with coffee and doughnuts, and the tradition continues with Mr. Christmas on Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoon.
For those last few special gifts for special folks, shop local at the Last Minute Panic Holiday Marketplace at the WNY Book Arts Center on Washington and Mohawk. The fun starts with more than 40 vendors Friday evening and continues all day Saturday.
Looking for a new holiday tradition with an adult twist? Expo's Santa Bar Crawl on Saturday might be just the ticket. It includes Osteria, Gypsy Parlor, Acropolis, Hardware, DBGB's, and Expo (and transportation!) as well as cash prizes and liquid libations.
December18 is your last chance to see a host of holiday productions. If there's a must-see on this list, make plans to get to the theatre this week: A Christmas Carol, A Christmas Story, The Night Before Christmas, Christmas is Comin' Uptown, and julie B. Jones in Jingle Bells Batman Smells.
Sunday is also the day to have Brunch with Santa at Tewksbury Lodge.
If, on the other hand, even one more Christmas carol threatens to send you over the edge, take a break with the kids at Discover the Dinosaurs UNLEASHED at the Covention Center. Reptilian respite is offered all day Saturday and Sunday.
