$1 Million In Improvements To Erie Basin Marina

Project Expected to Begin This Summer

Mayor Byron W. Brown today announced detailed plans for $1 million in upgrades and improvements to the Erie Basin Marina.

“With the city’s investment of $1 million, Buffalo’s waterfront is continuing to take shape and attracting more and more visitors,” said Mayor Brown. “Anyone who has been there lately can see the tremendous progress and the city is playing a key role in all of this development.”

The project will include a new boardwalk, enhancements to restroom facilities and security features for slip holders, with a focus on creating safer accessibility to the water’s edge.

Nearly $500,000 is designated for the construction of a new boardwalk. The 350-foot long boardwalk will be elevated, overlooking the beach area and Lake Erie. New concrete, lighted bollards, railings on both sides and handicap accessibility will be included in the boardwalk’s construction.

The marina seawall will be reconstructed in order to protect the shore and visitors to this area of the waterfront. Public restrooms and showers will be expanded. The installation of pier gates will act as a security measure for slip holders. The gates will improve safety around private boats.

During Fall 2010, the City of Buffalo was awarded a $1,000,000 grant through Upstate City by City Capital and the Empire State Development Corporation. Improvements are scheduled to begin by Labor Day of this year, with the project slated to be completed in Spring 2012.

In February of 2008, Mayor Brown announced an end to the area’s winter off-limits status for public access by removing the traffic barriers at the entrance.

In May 2008, Mayor Brown opened the new Erie Basin Marina Beach as a possible recreation location and new waterside destination for city residents and visitors seeking greater access to the city of Buffalo’s historic waterfront.
